| The importance of sexual health awareness - and increasingly of sexual and reproductive rights has been reflected in several key international conferences, including the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo and the 1995 Beijing conference, the UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS), as well as through the agreement of the Millennium Development Goals.
There are many factors that influence sexual health such as the condition of our sex organs, mental health, hormone balance, and stress. To begin with, so much is tied in with our general overall health. These could be problems with the sexual organs themselves, illness or disease, alcohol and tobacco use, or certain medications (ex: tranquilizers, antidepressants, antihypertensives, antihistamines).
There are also psychological factors for sexual dysfunction, such as stress and mood imbalance.
Your physician can best determine which underlying condition may be responsible for sexual dysfunction; and your pharmacist can best alert you to any medications that may be causing unwanted side effects. Don't be shy, don't back off when it comes to learn about your sexual health, because knowing it will go a long way.
